Twenty-six markers, grouped by what they do.
Inhibitory, the calming side. GABA, glycine, taurine and serotonin. ZRT describes these as promoting sleep and exerting calming effects at optimal levels.
Excitatory, the activating side. Glutamate, glutamine, dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, PEA and histamine. ZRT describes these as decreasing fatigue and supporting mental clarity at optimal levels.
Precursors, the raw materials. Tryptophan, tyrosine and histidine. Your body builds neurotransmitters from amino acids, and a precursor that is low or high tells you something a finished-product level alone does not.
Metabolites, the breakdown products. 5-HIAA, DOPAC, HVA, VMA, normetanephrine, N-methylhistamine and tyramine. These show what happened to the neurotransmitter after it was used.
The kynurenine pathway. Kynurenine, 3-hydroxykynurenine, kynurenic acid and xanthurenic acid. Tryptophan can go toward serotonin or down the kynurenine route. Seeing both tells you which way yours went.
Creatinine, which is not a neurotransmitter. It is measured on the same sample so results can be corrected for how dilute your urine was.

This is the part worth understanding before you buy anything.
A serotonin level on its own tells you one number. Serotonin plus tryptophan plus 5-HIAA tells you whether the raw material was there, whether it got converted, and what happened to it afterward. ZRT's framing is that seeing patterns across a pathway lets a practitioner identify where in that pathway something is off, rather than only that a single value sits outside range.
That is why the panel is 26 markers instead of five. You are paying for the pathway, not the snapshot.
Urine has long been the common way to measure neurotransmitters. The traditional method is collecting every void over 24 hours into a jug, which is awkward, easy to get wrong, and produces one averaged number with no sense of time of day. Some laboratories work around this by testing only the second morning void, which gives you a single morning snapshot instead.
ZRT collects four times in one day onto laboratory filter strips: first morning, second morning about two hours later, early evening, and bedtime. You urinate directly onto the strip or dip it in a cup. It takes about 2 mL, so you do not need a full bladder. The strip hangs to dry, and after at least four hours it goes in the box and into regular mail.
No refrigeration. ZRT's stability testing shows dried urine on filter paper holds at room temperature for at least a month.
Urine dilution changes with how much you drink. Every dried urine sample is also tested for creatinine, which your muscles produce at a fairly steady rate, and results are reported per gram of creatinine rather than per unit of volume. ZRT describes this as more accurate than reporting per volume or per 24 hours.
This matters practically. It is why the instructions ask you to drink normally on collection day.

How do you test neurotransmitter levels?

Do I need to fast before a neurotransmitter test?
No fasting is required. You do need to avoid alcohol, nicotine, pineapple and walnuts on the day you collect, and to keep your fluid intake at your normal level.
Why does the kit ask for four samples instead of one?
Because neurotransmitter output changes across the day. One sample gives a single snapshot. Four samples at set times show what your levels look like in the morning, through the day and at night.
How is dried urine different from a 24-hour urine collection?
A 24-hour collection requires catching every void in a jug, keeping it cold, and returning it, and gives you one averaged figure. Dried urine uses about 2 mL per sample on a filter strip, needs no refrigeration, ships in regular mail, and preserves the time-of-day information.
How long do neurotransmitter test results take?
About two weeks after ZRT Laboratory receives your samples.
Can I take this test if I take medication?

Does this test diagnose anxiety or depression?
No. It is not a diagnostic test and it does not diagnose any condition. It gives you and your provider objective measurements to discuss alongside how you actually feel.
Can I repeat it to track changes?
Yes. Because the collection is reproducible, repeating the test is a practical way to see whether something has moved.
